Native American Education

The Governing Board will ensure that all Native American children attending District schools participate on an equal basis in educational programs and will ensure that tribal officials and parents/guardians of Native American children are given the opportunity to make comments and recommendations regarding the planning and development of educational programs.

The District will consult and involve tribal officials and parents/guardians in the planning and development of educational programs that are assisted with Title VIII Impact Aid funds or other funds received from outside agencies, and will afford tribal officials and parents/guardians of Native American children the opportunity to make comments and recommendations concerning:

  • Identification of the needs of Native American children
  • Identification of ways parents/guardians and tribal officials can assist Native American children to achieve the benefits from these educational programs
  • Presentation of their overall views on District educational programs which shall include:

    - The operation of District educational programs
    - The degree of parental/guardian participation involved.

The input of tribal officials and parents/guardians of Native American students will be examined and assessed in a meaningful way at an annual public meeting. District policies and procedures may be modified based on this input. The District will review school data and comments received from parents/guardians and tribal officials to assess the extent to which Native American children participate in the educational program on an equal basis.

Each year the District shall conduct a cost effective needs assessment to determine the specific educational needs of Native American students.

The District will disseminate in a timely manner, to Native American parents/guardians and tribal officials, the Title VIII application, plans for educational programs the District plans to initiate/eliminate, and when available, notice of evaluations of educational programs assisted with Title VIII, and/or other funds received from outside agencies. If necessary, the District will amend or modify policies and procedures at a regularly scheduled Board meeting to conform with appropriate requirements. Any amendments shall be provided to the affected tribe(s).

The District may use its Native American Education Parent Advisory Committee as an Ad Hoc committee to review Native American input regarding recommended changes in policies or procedures.
