Reporting Communicable Diseases
Whenever an employee of the district becomes aware of an outbreak of a case, a suspected case, or an outbreak of a communicable disease, the employee shall report such information to the school nurse. If the school nurse suspects that the student has a communicable disease listed in Table 2 to AAC R9-6-203, Exhibit # JLCB-E3 the nurse shall inform the school principal, who shall inform the Director of Health Services. If it turns out that the information confirms a reportable event, the Director of Health Services or designee shall, either personally or through a representative, report the outbreak with the information required by AAC R9-6-203(B), to the local health agency, within the time limits specified in Table 2.

Communicable disease outbreak of measles/mumps

  • According to the Pima County Health Department, one confirmed case of measles or mumps is considered an outbreak. Test results are received after two weeks for mumps. Confirmation of measles requires less time. Outbreak control measures for measles/mumps are as follows:
    • All students without one dose of documented MMR vaccine are suspended until they are immunized or until the risk period is over, which is 26 days after the onset of the last case.
    • A second dose of MMR will be required for all students.
    • All parents must be notified of the outbreak.
    • Adult staff will be treated the same as students. Adults are considered immune only if they were born before 1957, they have laboratory evidence of immunity, or they have documented MMR.
    • Pima County Health Department is available to assist with identification of students/staff requiring immunization and set up a school clinic to administer vaccine.

Communicable Diseases (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome - human immunodeficiency virus)
TUSD will not exclude an HIV positive student from school or school functions solely due to HIV infection.

  • The principal, the student, or the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of a minor student, the student's physician and health office personnel shall make decisions regarding the educational setting for HIV-infected students on a case-by-case basis.
  • The principal may also include the following individuals in this decision-making process: director of health services, school nurse, teacher and/or counselor.
  • These individuals shall consider the risks and the benefits to the student and others of maintaining the student in the school setting.
  • HIV/AIDS education programs shall be made available to students, parents and staff following the Arizona State Department of Education guidelines for the HIV/AIDS education through age-appropriate curricula, workshops or in-service training.

Confidentiality
All employees shall adhere to TUSD Confidentiality Policy and Regulations. School District personnel informed of the student's HIV infection on a "need to know" basis shall maintain that information as confidential.

Any school staff member who violates confidentiality shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary measures.
